Teen Model Portfolio Requirements and Guidelines

Modeling agencies Singapore has an important role in creating a good portfolio for aspiring teenage models to stand a credible chance amidst the high competition.

Teenage years are filled with vigor and beauty, and are the golden years for potential models to step foot into the industry. However, it is precisely because of the fact that many teenagers have much time and beauty to be capable models; the competition they face in the modeling industry becomes very high.

1.    Know your style

There are a numerous modeling styles; research on your preferred modeling style and design your portfolio accordingly. For example, runway modeling is strict on height requirements (above 170cm for most models); one way is to take shots that make you look taller, for example, a bottom-to-up angle has the potential to make you look taller. Whereas an editorial style would require you to have a striking front body shot with a slender figure, which thus requires good technique in posing. For some unique types of modeling like body parts modeling, you must, of course, include a well-taken photograph of the part of the body you want to model for.

2.    Show your versatility in modeling style

You need to include various shots, the more diverse they are, the better your chances at various kinds of jobs. You would have to minimally show at least one front, one side, one upper body, one full body shot and clear face shot. Be creative and communicate with the photographer for more ideas.

3.    Selling yourself

The purpose of a portfolio is to sell your look and your abilities, not what you are wearing. Fancy patterns, colors, jewelry and accessories will unnecessarily affect your original look and style. Wear simple or solid colored clothing in all your shots, and avoid too much color and pattern distractions. Most of the time, clients are looking for a blank canvass and want to use their imagination to suit you to the style they are envisioning.

4.    Maintain your grooming

You need to upkeep grooming a few days in advance from the actual shoot. The basic to–dos are to shape your nails, keep your hair neat and tidy, get a manicure or pedicure if necessary. On the day of the shoot itself, make sure a make-up artist, who knows the look and style you are going for, is engaged together with the photographer.

5.    Arranging your portfolio

Perhaps the hardest task would be the elimination of hundreds of photos. Remember any client would want to see only your best shots. You have to be able to impress the viewer with the fewest number of shots possible. Keep your portfolio from about 10-15 shots, but never more than 20. Put your best 2 on the front and the next best 2 at the back, so they are amazed from start till the end. Be sure to include a profile page with your key details such as height, weight, and the various important sizes such as chest, bust, waist and shoulder sizes.

Your portfolio is akin to a resume, its relevance depends on how updated your skills and knowledge level are. You have to create a resume that is consistently updated as time goes by. Your portfolio look has to resemble your real-life look as closely as possible.

Work closely with model agencies Singapore, and invest a good amount of time and money in a top of the class portfolio with crystal clear digital photographs. A sub-standard portfolio directly translates to mean a lower end model. If you want to go ahead of the curve and impress as a teenage model, your portfolio is a quintessential tool.

What Kind of Photos to Submit for Model Agency Representation?

To get to the interview table of a Singapore model agency, your photos are akin to a resume. It is vital to submit the best quality and different type of photos, preferably on your first attempt, to nail a solid impression and get the best modeling jobs possible. We list a few tips and rules to photo submission that is incredibly useful in getting recognized and wanted by an agency.

1.    When in doubt, go simple.

Modeling agencies are not interested in a ready-made product. More often than not, it gives the impression that you are inflexible and can only work with limited styles. Agencies would much rather prefer a model that they can match styles with and develop from scratch.
There is no need to submit studio quality shots. Simple portraits with adequate lighting and clarity are enough. Furthermore, if your shots don’t suit the style the agency wants (For example you take editorial photo shoots rather than television commercial shoots) you might appear unappealing. Agencies are not expecting grandeur; they want to see your raw and authentic beauty as much as possible for them to determine the kind of model they have to work with.

2.    Minimalism in style.
Don’t dress extravagantly in your photos (i.e. wedding dresses, prom dresses, expensive suits etcetera). Simple, plain colored clothing is enough. Most importantly, do not wear over revealing, or sexually provocative clothes. A Singapore model starting out is never required to send nudes or anything sexually sensitive unless you are a professional and established model and have filled in the proper paperwork for it.

Animal fur clothing is another issue you want to avoid. Fashion today is adapting to that which does not hurt other living beings or the environment. If the viewer of your photograph is sensitive on such issues, it may, in turn, affect your chances of joining the agency.

3.    Reveal your natural beauty.

Do not paint your face with excessive make-up, cosmetics or jewelry. A female model just needs to apply a little foundation, mascara, blush and lipstick, and a male model can apply a bit of powder without a noticeable change. For kids, it’s best to not have any make-up at all. Do wear any form of jewelry, but in minimal. Beyond affecting your natural look, do give the impression that you look and feel confident about yourself. This is very important as agencies want to view your natural face and the blank canvass that you provide them to work with.

4.    Don’t reveal your crazy and wild side.

Don’t submit photos that you took at a party last Friday night; Save it for Instagram. In general, do not submit photos with anyone in it other than yourself. Submit your single photo with class and professionalism.

5.    Flaunt it, if you have it.

If you do want to show your lively and eccentric personality in a professional manner you can try posing with a swimsuit. Confidence is the key and do make efforts to appear natural on your photos.

6.    One head shot and one body shot at a minimum.  Give a variety of emotions.

Take one head and one body shot at a minimum. Show left, and right poses. Don’t smile in all photos, use your creativity and show various emotions to show your expressive versatility. Don’t be stingy with your expressions.

7.    Make sure your photos are an actual representation of your physical body.

Never submit a photo which is totally different what you look like. The last impression you want to make is that you’re a person that lacks integrity or confidence. It will also disappoint the agency you are applying for when they meet a totally different person from what they saw on your photograph.

8.    Let your hair loose.

Ok, 2 things here, one is the metaphorical version of the expression, be completely relaxed in your photographs. One of the key distinctions between a model and others is his/her confidence. Do not show your stress. Next, in the literal sense let your hair loose, keep it neat and luscious. Agencies want to know what kind of hair you have that they can work with.

9.    Avoid background clutter.

Do not distract the viewer with too many things in the background. The agency wants to see only YOU, so stick with solid colored backgrounds.

10.    Provide your contact details.

Agencies will be quick to call you for an interview upon glancing through your photographs so make sure while providing your accurate contact information you remain contactable. You will also be contacted for jobs if you are selected, so be readily contactable.

A good photograph is a product of a countless number of attempts. Thus, invest time and effort in creating photos that will stand out from your competition.  A Singapore model of today will have a tough time out beating the competition in the growing modeling industry. All in all, do your homework on the agency before submitting your photographs.

How to Choose the Best Modelling Agencies in Singapore?

Modelling is like an investment for both models and modelling agencies Singapore. Agencies put their effort to find the best candidate, while you need to be smart enough to choose the best talent agency.

Modelling is a pretty big domain for models, bookers or modelling agencies! It takes a lot of patience, commitment, and dedication to become a successful model, meanwhile the talent agencies have to find the best candidate to train in and out of glamour world.

Success doesn't happen overnight! You become successful if you pick the right and legitimate modelling agency.

Singapore is one such country to have lot of scope for modelling! But again, there are many modelling agencies out there. So, how do you choose the legitimate agency? This post is the ultimate guide for your queries. The hot hubs for modelling in Singapore include Orchard, Bugis, Raffles Place, Lor Limau, etc.

Model Portfolio

Portfolios are very much essential as it attributes a strong foundation. It has to be created under a professional management or agency support.
If you're considering different pictures or amazing clicks, then consider outdoor photo-shoot, but remember it comes at hefty charges. (Take up only if you're ready for bigger investment). Singapore is world's most expensive country and it holds true for modelling niche too.

Personality

One of the biggest myths in the modelling agency is that 'a model has to be tall and fair'. If you want to join for some runways, then event organizers could ask for specific heights. But, if it's a video or some random ad shoot, then it isn't mandatory to be tall. The current trend of 'unfair & lovely' is taking the beauty niche by storm. A height of 5'9" works well for girls, but don't forget about Devon Aoki, who is one of the world's top supermodels, despite being just 5'5" inch tall. The whole point here is that if you think you're good enough to be a model, then do not take 'height' as a main constraint. Try your good luck!

Casting

Modelling castings are not to be taken lightly! Professional castings do not take place in night club or by web cam. If you get any call to do a shoot or show, get all details and do your research about the firm before giving a head-ups. Check their whereabouts and the professional casting usually happens in their registered office or work place.

Details to Check about Talent Agency

The best possible way to check is to go through the online reviews. You should be smart enough to differentiate the reviews written by real customers and fake 'model agency competitors'. Then again, if the agency has no permanent location or no license or works only online via web cam or social media, you need to be cautious. The best advice would be to get their phone number, as you can ask questions, clear your queries directly from them, not through any third-party or forums.

Also, find out about business registration number, Pte Ltd licence, recent projects, and model feedbacks or testimonials.

Fake competitions and reviews could be glossy or convincing, but do remember that Top Models are chosen by professionals, not by general public.

In a Nutshell

Legitimate talent or modelling agencies make a profit out of commission and it is your duty to check all details before signing any contract with them. Some agencies cut some percentage from model's earnings, while some pay for the cards. Neither is wrong nor right, as every agency works differently.

It's best to talk to them in person, so that it makes a clear cut conversation- No Hassle, No Regret. Genuine modelling agencies Singapore don't mind answering the queries of the customers. You should know the chain of command and how modelling agencies work, if you want to become a model or manage your modelling career peacefully.
