Becoming a model in
Singapore is hard but anyone can be a model with the right attitude and mindsets,
as there are various modeling jobs to suit various individual styles. However,
it is also hard because of the competition in modeling, especially because we
are open society constantly attracting the likes of international models.
Hence, there are certain essential steps for you to follow that we will point
out in this article.
Join a Modeling Agency
The right modeling agency Singapore will be able to develop you as a model by
identifying your style and strength, and playing to that by giving you the
right skill sets and jobs. They are able to procure so many high paying deals
for you; you are still better off going through them.
Be wary of the scammers and the fakes, many of them are lurking
around in the guise of a modeling agency to take advantage of young and
attractive girls and guys. Some of the pointers that easily give them away are,
shady unpopulated location of meet up, guaranteeing of jobs quickly, no
contract or formal negotiation process, asking you to come alone (never go
alone if you are below sixteen years old), asking you to do explicit poses for
of modeling (never do anything you are uncomfortable with). Choosing the right modeling agency Singapore has the
ability to make or break your career, so put in careful thought and research
into your choice.
Get your poses right
Being a model is less about how you actually look, and more
about how photogenic you are. This comes naturally to some models, yet many
others have to practice to get it right. Few basic tips are:
i. Tilt your chin down
(Avoid the double chin effect)
ii. Play with your hair
for girls; create a neat and sleek hairstyle for guys
iii. Lift the arm;
don’t press it against your body
iv. Twist your posture;
don’t face the camera straight on
v. Neck and ear
forward. Defines your angular features and creates a distance between your face
and body, making your body appear slightly slimmer.
vi. Angle your body
maximum two-thirds away from the camera.
vii. Don’t show your
side faces completely, as it will capture the full length of your nose. Turn in
towards the face a little to avoid the ‘Pinocchio effect’.
viii. Open your mouth
slightly to produce a subtle luring effect on the viewer
Social Media and
Instagram
If you aren’t decided on modeling as of yet, you may be waiting
to be scouted. Traditionally the most common way is to walk the streets of the
city area and randomly bump into scouts. However, with the advent of social
media, a model can use it to display pictures of herself and her social life.
Take attractive photos and display a vibrant personality and who knows, a
scouter might approach you.
Socialize and Network
If you are thinking of being a model or want to be one, the best
way to find out more information and details about that lifestyle is through
networking. Get off your seat and call your modeling friend out for coffee;
research on corporate events and parties and try to get your ticket in. You
will be meeting potential clients and models and getting insider information
that will prove valuable to you as you venture in the modeling industry.
Anyone can be a model in Singapore with the right strategies and
techniques, and it doesn’t depend on a specific look. However, it does require
much hard work and time to be invested in order to see success as it’s one of
the most competitive industries out there. Joining one of the many esteemed model agencies Singapore like Create Talents and Models will be a
good starting point for you, and a guide to eventual success.
From Victoria’s Secrets models to
the models you see at your local promotions event, everyone has to go this
process of casting and convince a row of judges that their worth being hired
for their modeling jobs. So what do
you expect at a model casting, and how do you perform up to par against your
competition?
Prepare
to wait
Model castings are done only on
certain timings and there are many people eyeing for the same modeling jobs. So interviews become a
long process and will definitely test your patience. So be prepared and alert
too, as in case if you don’t give a response when your name is being called,
the next person on the list immediately gets the go.
Go
in to meet the client
You will be directed to meet the
client in a particular room. They will first ask for your comp card and your
portfolio. After that, they may choose to ask you a few questions about your
experiences and your background. Most clients will then ask you to do some
runway walking and poses. This is your chance to impress the clients, so focus
and do it slowly. After which they might comment on you or ask you to leave.
How
to prepare for Casting
Casting like any audition process, preparation
will determine whether you get the opportunity or not. You might ask what a
comp card and portfolio is? They are the most important documents that you must
possess as a model. A comp card, short for composite card arranges your key
features in an A5 sized card and includes information such as height, weight,
and various key body sizes. It’s almost akin to an identity card and tells the
client what they need to know about you in a concise manner.
The ‘portfolio’ on the other hand,
is an extension of your comp card but includes a large variety of shots. It
will typically include your past projects, test shoots, and maybe even URLs to
videos or online websites/ platforms with your work, if there are any. The portfolio
is usually created for you by a modeling agency, if you had gotten a client
that way. You can alternatively create the comp card and portfolio yourself but
you have to do proper research and get it done with adherence to industry
standards.
What
to wear
The golden rule of casting is to
always wear simple and be simple. It is at times hard to determine what exactly
the client wants. If you are wearing a complex outfit what you are wearing may
contradict the client’s expectations. Never wear fancy patterned clothing, jewelry,
accessories, or excessive makeup that affects your original style and look.
Clients want to know your natural look for them to mold you into the type of
model they are expecting for in the project. At the most, some foundation and
mascara with simple patterned and colored outfit should be worn.
Confidence
Sometimes clients may ask questions
that have no relevance to modeling. For example, they may ask your favorite
hobbies. What’s important here is not your answer, but your level of confidence.
It doesn’t matter what you say but are you saying it with confidence? It
doesn’t matter if you don’t execute your pose or walk the runway perfectly, but
are you doing it with confidence? Technique matters just as much as personality
and that is what will convince them that you are the face for their modeling jobs.
Casting is a fairly simple process,
yet not easy to conquer. But you can prepare through practice. Stand in a front
of a mirror and practice your walks and poses. Maintain your health and beauty
in the week that leads up to your casting call. With
preparation comes confidence, any casting call would be a breeze.
The
end of the year is here! You know what that means; don’t you? It is now the
season of joy, giving, and reflection. We want to recap you with some of our
best projects over the course of 2016. We delight in all the projects that Create Talents and Models has
successfully accomplished over the year and so that all of us who are part of
this great agency may head into the New Year with a greater sense of passion,
pride, and style.
Orchard Gateway Bridal Fashion Show
Early
in the year, from March to June 2016, stunning Bridal Fashion show took place at Orchard Gateway which left the
audience (especially women awaiting their big day) at awe. It was held over a
course of 7 series and our models Ula L, Nazli G, Randi B and Kirsten P had to
pose for photo shoots and perform runway modeling with their magnificent gowns.
Trust us, it was tough to get all of them dressed and ready to model with
perfection, nevertheless our female models didn’t disappoint and had put on their A
game. Bridal modeling has its challenges, yet it always turns out to be
exciting and a treat for the eyes.
HPB Shoot
The Health Promotion Board print advertisement is one of our cherished Government sector projects which featured male model Zali B. It was an F.I.G.H.T campaign which was meant to educate the public on the ways to protect against Flu and other infectious diseases. The advertisement had become very popularly spread island wide. We were certainly excited to see Zali all over the nation on posters on buses, taxis, and billboards.
Front Row Runway Festival at The
Shoppes at MBS
A
prestigious event which featured our Create
Talents Model, RK10 K, is the ‘Front Row’ Runway Festival held at Marina
Bay Sands. It was a celebration of fashion weeks from the four fashion capitals
around the world Milan, Paris, London and New York. RK10K represented Uomo
Collezioni’s Canali brand and strode the runway with a day and nightwear suit.
The event had featured an array of grand designer brands such as Diane Von
Furstenberg, Burberry, Coach, and Versace, amongst which was the equally
prestigious Canali. RK10K was an absolute dapper and made a strong statement
about the Canali brand which is re-launching in Singapore.
Asian Tour
A
whopping ten of our kid models took
part in this single project which was meant to advertise the Asian Tour. The
Asian Tour, in a nutshell, stages multiple tournaments throughout Asia and aims
to develop professional golf throughout Asia. The kid models involved were
Carmen G, Charlie T, Esther P, Jayden-G, Kenji P, Matt Jaemond, Maurice H,
Shawn P, Rahul, and Rishab. It is our pleasure to see such young, bright
talents excelling in the modeling field, and finding confidence in their own
body and skin. Kudos to the young lads, and we hope to work more with our kid
models who are full of life.
Jetstar Asia
The
first project by Jetstar Asia
entitled #FridayFREEFlights was a
fun and quirky project in which our models Angela P and Han S had to model for
basically our generation’s favorite past time- ‘taking selfies’. A short video
was released on every Tuesday of the month of October, where the public could
take part through following the theme and instructions given for the week as
exemplified through our models and upload their selfie on respective Fridays on
any social media account. The four creative themes were ‘Lovey Dovey Passport
Selfie’, ‘Goofy Passport Selfie’, ‘Photobomb Passport Selfie’ and ‘Face Swap
Passport Selfie’.
The
second was a print advertisement featuring out model Candy N being part of a
group selfie advertising Jetstar. We are on the whole, honored to have worked
with one of Singapore’s aviation giants, and we look forward to collaborating
on more future projects.
Mediacorp
Mediacorp
has always been our prestigious client where many talents from our agency get
the opportunity to cast and act. This year, we did a heartwarming Father’s day
TV commercial project which featured 6 of our models, Jan D, Ali Khan, Teck
Lee, Alexa P, Viran D, and Mukesh K. The advertisement tugged at the heart
strings and made everyone think about the love and importance of fathers. It
was broadcasted on Mediacorp Channel 5
together with the hashtag #CelebratingFathersSG which sparked meaningful
conversation on social media.
Another
Mediacorp Channel 5 project we
concluded successfully this year was the ‘Cash Struck’ video shoot with our
senior model, Moey Y. This was a spoof of the PPAP (Pen pineapple Apple Pen)
song which went viral online. We thank Mediacorp for the opportunity to allow Create Talents for giving our models
the experience to be part of a significant mainstream media channel in
Singapore.
That’s not all! We also had some
awesome Print Advertisements to add to the souvenir collection.
Other
than the Jetstar Asia and HPB print advertisements shoots we also had our
models featuring for other companies. They include Keks K for POSB, Nia S for Bata, Shayan K for M1 & C3A 2016
Shoot, Joshua N and Ryan C for Mount Faber Peak, Anneliese W for AIA group
photoshoot, Han S & Bonnie Y for FairPrice Shoot, and Jane J for P&G
(Procter & Gamble) print advertisements.
In a Nutshell
Create Talents and Models has come far over the
course of the year and worked for plenty of clients apart from those listed
above. Some of which are, SG Secure,
Singtel, Starhub, Samsung, IDA, Skin
Inc, Bata, Maggi, Chandon, Dutch
Lady & Disney, Klook, Guinness, Golden Scissors Awards events and many projects.
None
of these successes would be possible without the people hard at work behind the
scenes. The scouters work hard, rain or shine, to search and recruit promising
new talents; our bookers diligently source for good job opportunities for our
models, our customer service front line patiently deals with large numbers of
clients and models every single day, and our photographers do an excellent job
at getting the best quality of visuals possible. Thank you to everyone who has
made this agency kicking and running. This is only the beginning of many more
successes to come in a brand new year. 2017, here we come!
Impress
modeling agencies Singapore with
more than just your looks and find out what are the personality traits you
need.
Modeling
is just like any other career that requires a professional attitude and
personality for you to achieve in, and it’s not as the common assumption goes,
about having good looks or tall height. Your abilities to carry yourself in
front of the camera, your personality, characteristics and attitude have
drastic influences on your overall success as a Singapore model.
1.
Flexibility – Adaptability - Cooperation
Modeling
being a fast-paced industry is quickly subject to changes in workplace
conditions. You may get important job offers amidst your work or school which
you would have to fit in your schedule. Of course, you can reject or accept any
job offer, but that there is where your flexibility in the schedule comes.
Modeling work can also pose last minute changes to the project requirements,
for example, there may be long hours on one day, and shorter than expected
hours on another, depending on how well a shoot progresses. As a model, you
would have to adapt to such conditions with the least complaints.
What
often comes with adaptability is resilience and strength of character, so as a
model it is necessary to be strong-willed, and cooperates with your modeling agencies Singapore to ensure
the entire project is completed as smoothly as possible.
2.
Strong Mind – Accepting of Criticism
We
aren’t going to lie and say that you will sail through smoothly throughout your
entire career as a model. No matter how good you look or carry yourself as a
model, there are bound to be errors and lapses in performance from time to
time. The casting and modeling directors because of time constraint and competition
may go a little harsh on their criticism so that you may perform up to their
expectations. As a success-oriented model, you should accept these criticisms
and improve your performance or poses. It may be a tough journey no one would deny,
but it will also be worthwhile.
3.
Punctuality and Patience
Lateness
is a sign of disrespect in modeling and can affect your chances as there are
many just like you competing for the same opportunity. Always be punctual.
After you’ve arrived at your casting call or project venue there will always be
busy preparations and you might need to wait your turn. Your patience becomes a
virtue and will aid you in this field. On a bigger scale, modeling jobs are
also offered on an irregular basis. You need to be patient in receiving job
opportunities, and of course, once you start gaining more experiences, your job
offers will unsurprisingly start increasing as well.
Conclusion
Although
many models appear emotionless on their photos a good deal of optimism is
required for models to wake up to come to work. Modeling agencies Singapore love models that bring a positive
attitude to work and have the right personality to work with. You will over
time see yourself getting better opportunities as well.
In the month of October, Jetstar Asia held a selfie taking contest entitled,
#FridayFREEFlights. Every Tuesday a theme was disclosed and participants have to send in their selfies which fit the theme accordingly on Fridays on stated timings. Our models Han S and Angela P starred in the commercials that revealed these themes and played a crucial role in advertising the contest and drawing responses from the public.
Why were Han S and Angela P chosen?
The four themes were ‘Lovey Dovey Passport Selfie’, ‘Goofy Passport Selfie’, ‘Photobomb Passport Selfie’ and ‘Face Swap Passport Selfie’. These are all, as they sound, very casual light-hearted themes.
The photos can be easily taken with simple poses and utilizing any normal Smartphone. Check out the first video with the theme of ‘Lovey Dovey Passport Selfie’ and the other context videos on Youtube channel, and you would understand why yourself!
Models Han S and Angela P had looks that represented the common Singaporean and their looks suited these themes very well. They resonated well to the public and draw responses from them easily. They were thus effective in the marketing campaign.
Where would you rather be?
Participants of the contest simply needed to upload their passport selfies with the corresponding theme (as our models performed in the ad) to any of their social media platform. A caption on where you would rather be had to be included, for example the winner of round 3 (Jetstar Asia) had appended the caption, “I’d rather be at Disneyland Hong Kong watching the Festival of the Lion King than singing the circle of life and playing pretend at home with the person behind, after that still must pack!” And of course tagged with the hashtag, #FridayFREEFlights
It was overall a joyful project for those who participated and won in the contest. It was a reason for friends to come together and take silly photos that will over time serve as sweet memories for them.
Create Talents and Models is proud to see its models being involved with a major client in the Singapore Aviation industry, and to have had been involved in such a light hearted and joyful campaign like #FridayFREEFlights. Thank you to Jetstar Asia for this opportunity, and we propose toast to more successful projects together.
Excelling in the modern modeling industry without the
aid of a well-established Singapore
modeling agency is a task akin to climbing a mountain alone. Getting into a
good model agency is essential and an agency which sees potential in you will
be acquiring top notch jobs for you as well, but impressing an agency also
seems like a daunting task. But do not fret, as we will list you some insider
tips on how to make a perfect first impression that lasts.
Submit
quality photographs
This would one of the first few things you would be
submitting to the agency alongside your resume and cover letter. Now your instinct
or first thought would tell you to go borrow your friend’s makeup and dress,
and take as many glamour shots as possible. Quite to the contrary, that is
actually a very wrong move.
Why? It’s because any Singapore modeling agency, like Create Talents and Models would be looking for a humble blank
canvass they can weave to fit into modeling, rather someone who appears to be
strongly inclined to a particular style of modeling and may pass off as
arrogant. The agency would want to see what kinds of styles they can pull off
with your look and how versatile you are. With their experienced staff, they
will be able to visualize you with the makeup and clothes they want. Hence,
your photographs should be very simple, with simple colored clothing and very
minimal makeup (Some foundation and mascara at the most).
What you should work on is showing off your body with
different poses. Using a regular Smartphone camera (You are a model who wants
to make money; you are not expected to take professional studio quality shots
on your own yet), try various poses and at various camera angles (Top-down,
Bottom-up, side etcetera). Have at least one full body, half body, and face
shot. The background of the photo should also be simple (A white wall would
work best), and should not interfere with your natural look.
Ace
your interview
The same philosophy of simplicity can be applied to
your interview as well. Your most important accessory is your confidence.
Minimal makeup and solid colored clothing is the best outfit to wear to the
interview. Neat, thick and luscious hair helps; you definitely want to avoid
frizz, so use a small amount of pomade to keep the stubborn ends in check.
Smile whenever possible, and be confident during your interview. Show your
passion for modeling by naming some of the models you look up to, and some of
the poses you have learned on your own. That alone should suffice for the
agency to choose you. Ultimately they are not looking for a finished package,
but rather someone with the potential for development.
Upkeep
your health and beauty towards your interview date
Be very mindful of what you eat, your sleep hours and
general health and wellbeing. Good tips from models would be to moisturize your
skin, condition your hair and wash your face regularly (2 to 3 times a day is
adequate, over washing isn’t good as well). Avoid fast food and alcohol, and
drink plenty of water (8 glasses minimum). Of course, the duration you should
maintain this lifestyle is for as long as possible and time taken to see
effects vary among people, but you should lead this lifestyle at least a week
before your interview if you want to make a good impression.
In general, go organic with your food and beauty
products. The natural products will give your skin a natural glow that is what
a Singapore modeling agency is
seeking for, anyone can wear makeup, but a model should strive to go an extra
mile above a common person in terms of maintaining one’s natural looks.
Conclusion
Just like how a concrete foundation is a base for the
tallest skyscraper, a well-established impression and relationship with the
modeling agency plays a pivotal role in whether you make it or break it.
In
this Create Talents and Models review
we look at our fit and muscular hunk, 28-year-old male model S Yang Heng, known
by screen name YH S. His testimonial was conducted in the company studio as well some outdoor shoot to add some fun element. His current
status as a part-time student studying at RMIT, hobbies of exercising and traveling
will come to you as no surprise when you look at his well-toned body,
modelesque features and some insightful advices on modeling. Anyone interested
in modeling has to listen to what he says!
YH
S was approached by the scouters from Create Talents and Models as he was walking along Orchard Road one night at
Somerset 313. The scouter gave him a name card and asked him if he was interested
in modeling. He agreed came down for an interview the next day, and joined the
firm subsequently.
When
asked about an exciting experience he had, he mentioned that there was one time
where he had to pair up with a girl whom he did not know at all, and the staff
in-charge of the project were from Hong Kong. He found that fun and that the
people were nice. He had to pretend to be a couple with the girl, so he had a
challenge of ‘breaking the ice’ quickly. It was important as it made the photo
look realistic and made it look like they were really in love and were a
couple. It took them both a few tries, but male
model believes it was executed well in the end, and everyone was happy and
pleased.
Yan
Heng’s favorite project was the Maggi Mee Hokkien Char Mee television advertisement. It was filmed during the
seventh month of the Hungry Ghost Festival, in the middle of nowhere, and at
night where it was pitch black and the crew had to use their own lamps and
lights. He remarks that the staffs were really spontaneous, encouraging, and
their sense of humor and jokes kept everyone comfortable and going. He liked working
with one of his co-actors, named Ian G, who also happened to a model from Create Talents and it was very fun. The
whole shoot took about eight hours but to him it felt like only a few minutes
had passed.
Model
also had good advice to give on what a model requires to succeed. He had two
main points, the first being confidence, and the second is being adaptable.
Confidence, as Yang Heng mentions, is when you have to portray yourself in the
image of what the photographer wants, and that’s where patience comes in as
well. Different people have different expectations, so a model would also have
to adapt quick to what is required on the spot, and not just stick with the
image you have in mind.
Embracing
uncertainty is also another notable characteristic of YH S who mentions he
likes the feeling of not knowing what’s coming next in life. He likes seeing
the different job opportunities he receives when he opens up the messages from
Create Talents. It’s a very different experience every time and he likes to be
able to prepare his best with the limited time given to him. He believes
working as such is more fulfilling and exciting rather than something that is
monotonous and boring.
When
speaking on why he likes working with Create
Talents, Yang Heng says that the agency has opened a lot of doors for him.
He has been to quite a number of model castings, and each one is different from the
next. So each one is also an experience and all of them have been fun. He looks
forward to learning more with our agency.
So
is modeling just about looks? Yang Heng doesn’t think so. He says it surely
takes personality and spontaneity. He advises aspiring models to take a leap of
faith because you never know what’s going to happen and you never know what
opportunities will come. If you take the leap of faith and gain the experience,
you might even be acting or shooting with Yang Heng next time, which he is
really looking forward to!
