Do you think Create Talents and Models is a scam?

How to Become a Model in Singapore?

Singapore, a landmark for many facets of the global community is also an aspiring hub of fashion. Its small size doesn’t mean the lack of talent but rather the concentration of talent in a small island. Even for fashion, especially commercial modeling in Singapore, it’s highly competitive and requires an acute sensing of the industry and relevant expertise. Buckle up while we drive you through the must-knows of how to become a model in Singapore.

Diversity
Singapore is a home to 4 major races and has about half the population consisting of foreigners. Being such an open and diverse society has a direct impact on the DNA of the modeling and fashion industry in Singapore. With multiple race and cultures, clients are having a harder time seeking the best models to fit their jobs; it has thus become harder to amalgamate models with societal expectations. Thus modeling in Singapore is unlike most other countries or modeling regions, have to be flexible and work with different costume type and be able to capture the emotion and essence of various cultural products and services.

Portfolio + Comp card
A portfolio and a comp card akin to a resume in the modeling industry and are of high importance in attracting clients and securing jobs. It doesn’t matter how good your looks or personality is if the camera cannot capture it; that is where the portfolio and comp card show the potential client that you are camera friendly.

First, a comp card, short for composite card compiles your best body features in an A5 sized card and includes critical information such as height, weight, key sizes (bust, waist and hips). It succinctly provides information about you that is relevant to the client. If your comp card is appealing enough, the client will most likely proceed to view your portfolio, which neatly displays photos of your past projects your test shoots and may even include URLs to videos  (Not common but can be included if there is a video that is done that is very credible). A portfolio should include at least one shot that is formal, informal/casual attires with front, side, half body and full body shots.

Social Media and Insta Modeling
Use social media to your advantage and especially in the digital age it makes good sense to be active online so that potential agencies or scouters are able to find you and assess your potential. However, it is not necessary or perhaps better not to post professional studio quality photos. This will make your social media account no different from your portfolio. Agencies want to look at photos that are posted casually without any expectations. They also want to know that you know how to have a good time and have an outgoing persona.

Pageant and competitions
Pageants and modeling competitions are the other ways to enter into the modeling industry if you are willing and able to be exposed quickly and can handle the fame and attention that comes with it. However depending on the competition you participate in your success would depend on the networks you have and the wealth at your disposal to invite friends to a pageant to vote to for you. It may not be straightforward if you aren’t able to afford the costs associated with the pageant.

Networking and Socializing

This goes without saying, but modeling in Singapore, especially for particular styles of modeling like event modeling, it’s your socializing and networking skills are of utmost importance.  Not just important for successful completion of the projects, but by making the right contacts you may be exposed to a variety of job opportunities in the modeling industry, and perhaps even get to work for big clients, thus leapfrogging in your career faster than if otherwise.

Be mindful of the tips given to excel in the modeling industry of Singapore. Most importantly be patient as the right kind of clients and jobs take time to come your way. Always practice your modeling poses, walks and definitely put in effort to get better. With time and hard work, good opportunities are bound to come by your way.

The Ultimate Photo Shoot Guide for Models

Being in modeling Singapore is far beyond the work of pretty faces only; it is serious business. As a growing fashion hub, models who intend to be successful are expected to have the caliber to compete on the global stage, which presents giants in the likes of Gisele Bündchen and Kate Moss. As such, we have created an ultimate photo shoot guide for models to get the best advice in their photo shoot performance.

Plan your Wardrobe

“Building a wardrobe is like building a circle of friends your whole life... Your own beauty is to be yourself, but of course, we need tools and accessories.” - Diane von Furstenberg

Modeling Singapore agencies would have certain standard outfits, but as an aspiring model who wants to leapfrog ahead of the competition, you can certainly choose to invest in your own clothes. Use the 3Cs we have come up with (Categorize, Coordinate, and Choose). Categorize your wardrobe into various sections, based on themes. Themes would naturally get your colors and styles to fit it naturally (e.g. A melancholic theme would consist of dark colors and gothic patterns). Also as said by French model Constance Jablonski, always be careful with the proportions of your silhouette. Make sure the volume of a dress is balanced (for example, if a dress has a high volume on the bottom, the top should be something thin).

Next coordinate, liaise with your bookers and identify the key themes and emotions that the client is expecting from you and lastly choose the best the best outfits that match the theme.

Be Vocal

Be vocal before the photo shoot as you aren’t going to have many opportunities to talk during the shoot itself. Start with something along the line of, “My favorite modeling style is...” Your thoughts will help the photographer know what kind of talent he/she has to work with.

Research on modeling poses

No photographer wants to deal with a model lacking creativity and initiative. Cool your head, and confidently experiment with your body and execute various poses. Never hold a pose longer than expected, work in tune with the photographer.  Here are some tips on what you can do with your body:

1.    Touch your cheeks lightly, open your mouth slightly (Give a subtle inviting posture to the viewer).
2.    Avoid placing your hands flat on your body and don’t exert too much tension on them and as it can be obviously seen. Be gentle and place them on various parts of body gently.
3.    Change your expressions. One great way to do that is to think of experiences that match the theme of your photo shoot. For instance, if you need to smile, think of your happiest experiences and add a natural positive vibe to the photo.
4.    Never be a pole. By this we mean, don’t pose with a straight body to the camera. Tilt your head, twist your body two-thirds from the camera, or at minimum put your hand on hips with your elbows pushed back.
5.    Flaunt the shape of your body by putting one hand on the waist and holding the elbow of the other hand.
6.    Play with your hair, especially for women. Be creative, experiment with placing various sides of your hair over and behind your different shoulders.
7.    Keep your chin down, Neck forward, and bring your ears forward. Tilting it as such avoid the double chin face, and emphasizes your angular features on your face.
8.    Adhere to the ‘Follow your nose rule’ for your eyes. Your eyes are the focus of photos. Too much white in your eyes can affect the color and contrast pattern of the eyes. Simply following the direction of your nose can give the most suitable eye positioning.
9.     Don’t keep the arm pressed against your body; this will make it appear larger than its normal size. Lift it slightly even for simple poses to exhibit your natural arm size.

Smize

Following the tips on your photo shoot is essential but you would also have to practice them on your own as well. One key practice that is absolutely essential is the practice of Smizing, also known as smiling with your eyes. Look at this Tyra Banks video and see what it’s all about.

Practice by squint your eyes and using the muscles at the temple of the face region. Avoid staring; be conscious of your eyes as it’s usually the center of focus for most viewers.

Importance of your photographer

“Skill in photography is acquired by practice, not by purchase.” - Percy W. Harris

Don’t judge a book by its cover; don’t judge a photographer by their camera. Simply trust that they know more about you in the field of photography, and trust them. After a round of photos request for a quick glance at the photos and give them constructive criticism if you have any. They have a very tough role of making things work, so cooperate well with them.

Lastly, never forget to wear your confidence, and treat the photo shoot as a fun game even though the stakes are high. Because ultimately that is the only way to excel in the modeling Singapore industry, by having as much fun as you during your photo shoot.

How to detect legitimate Model Agency from Fraudsters?

Choosing the right model agency Singapore can be said to be the pinnacle of a Model’s success. But because of its importance, fraudsters prey on the desires in the aspirants of fame and Modeling success. A legitimate model agency Singapore based has a few key attributes that distinguish it from fraudulent agencies. If you are an aspiring hopeful in modeling, read on diligently and take these tips to heart when you engage with any agency.

1.    Their media and social presence

In today’s digital age, any credible modeling agency would have no excuses for putting itself out there for the world’s attention and respect. With a plethora of web platforms such Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Wordpress, Blogspot etcetera, a good agency would take the liberty to display its models and talents clearly for the world to see. More professional agencies would take an extra step and put up their models' testimonials and reviews, to establish trust with their clients and attract the best models. Basically, they would have no fear, and have a well-maintained media image.

2.    Guarantees jobs, no need for portfolio or contract

If an agency confirms with you a job on the first day, you must already be as great as Gisele Bündchen, or they are out to scam your money, and you already know which one is the answer. The first obvious sign is how eager they are to rush to you into joining because they aren’t really interested in developing you as they are in your wallet. A credible agency knows that getting a client and an assignment takes time, requiring the careful and rigorous building of your portfolio first. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither would your career.

3.    Location of the modeling agency

If a model agency Singapore is located in a decentralized area far from human traffic like an alley of some sort, that might be a be an immediate red light. With the prevalence of rape, money scammers, drug abuse, nude photography, and pornography associated with the modeling industry, such places will create the opportunity for you to be vulnerable enough to be taken advantage of. Credible agencies make it point to be located in central areas. Take for example Create Talents and Models located just beside Dhoby Ghaut MRT, Orchard road, and right in the middle of Singapore.

4.    Reputation and Legacy

How do you determine a good agency? How the agency has fared over the years? Legacy can be determined by the number of years they have been established and reputation can be determined by what people say. Beyond reviews and testimonials find out social media reviews and other credible forums like Google reviews. On the other hand do not believe hearsay as there are many enemies that are borne out such a competitive industry that set out to defame other agencies, especially so if it’s successful. Be discerning as you read through the feedback as well.

5. Do your ground research

However revolutionizing the digital world may seem word-of-mouth still remains the best way for information dissemination and finding out deeper insights in the industry. Before you step into an agency get hold of someone works there or anyone whom you may know who works or has worked at the agency and find out their experiences. A disclaimer, not everyone has a good experience in any agency; there are in-betweens and gray areas. Understand that there are 2 sides to every story and try to understand the situation from the agency’s perspective as well. Talk to multiple people, and make a more informed decision from there.

With all that is said, finding a legitimate model agency is of first and foremost importance, as going to the wrong one may cause you to lose faith in the industry entirely. If you want success it’s not going to come easy. Finding the right agency is similarly not an easy task. Bring the advice we have given to fruition and you should no qualms over picking the right agency to spearhead your growth and career.

The Role of a Booker in a Modeling Agency

The ‘Booker’ arguably has the most important role in any modeling agency Singapore based. They are responsible for multiple crucial aspects of day-to-day business in the agency and are also someone whose importance may be understated in the industry. In this article, we elaborate on some of the key duties of bookers and how they keep the modeling world ticking.

i.    Grooming of new talents

Models that join an agency are most times new to modeling or at least they are new to the style of work by the agency. Bookers are also known as ‘model managers’ who introduce new faces into the industry, and figure out which style of modeling suits the model. The booker will be quick to interpret clients’ feedback and see where the model best suits in and excels in, essentially determining the career path for the aspiring models. Grooming of talents is perhaps the most important duty of a booker.

II.    Scouting for new talents

Some of the best models are sometimes scouted. If the agency doesn’t have many scouters or doesn’t have a separate department of scouters, the booker is required to spend a significant amount of the day scouting and searching for new talents and bring fresh faces to the agency.

III.    Responsible for model being at the right place at the right time

Once a Booker confirms the model with a client, the booker has to schedule and liaise with the client with the model on the most mutually convenient timing possible. The booker also has the responsibility of giving the models the right information in terms of venue, timing etc. and must ensure the model is punctual for the particular assignment.

iv. Negotiating payment

If you thought the job was tough enough already, this one takes the cake. Every client wants to pay the lowest possible fee to cut their expenditure. The modeling agencySingapore bookers thus have a major set of challenges as they have to fix a price that is most competitive and at the same time profitable for the agency. Booker has to work to find a middle ground and also make sure the model is paid and looked after well.

v.    Networking with a vast number of clients and companies.

Bookers have to work hard to secure contracts with many different clients and companies, especially high profile ones. This then requires good networking skills, and the ability to sell the brand of models to the various clients. Because of the pervasive competition in the industry, a client can easily compare with all the other agencies in the market and can easily lean toward other options. Booker thus must have a plethora of contacts and glad and be close to other companies and clients better than bookers of other agencies to draw the best opportunities in the industry. This means frequent meet-up and communication with clients.

vi. Miscellaneous personal issues

Models have a few things to consider at times, such as nutrition, beauty, legal advice, and traveling arrangements (especially for international assignments) sometimes come under the purview of bookers as well. Although modeling agency Singapore based bookers are already busy with their daily work, they sometimes have to work out such issues for models as well. This again requires patience and a strong network and knowledge of the industry.

So there you have it. Now, you may be more enlightened on the gravity of a booker’s role in a modeling agency and respect their work more. As tough as the job is, it’s always rewarding to help fulfill the dreams of aspiring models and make develop talents into icons and successful figures.

Top 3 Tips for a New, Aspiring Model

As an aspiring Singapore model, the competition can be tough and it’s hard to become a top contender in the business without knowing the best tips and strategies in the field. So read on carefully and follow these tips religiously if you are looking for a successful modeling career.

Choosing the right model agency

This can be harder than expected because of the numerous options at our disposal. The trick here is simple, RESEARCH. Not all modeling agencies will suit your style, so research on the various types of modeling jobs (fashion model, editorial or publication model, fashion shows, or television commercial acting model etc.) and choose the best Singapore model agency that suits your interest.

Any credible agency would prove itself by showing their model’s testimonials and reviews. Find out what the models have to say about their experiences, and you will be able to roughly figure out the kind of future you can expect there. Most importantly be careful of the fakes and stick to credible and well- established agencies.

Submit the best photos to get selected

Once the right agency is chosen, applying to it requires a good sense of the industry as well. A standard resume and cover letter is a requirement, but in this industry, your photos take the top precedence. Agencies or employers are not looking for grandiose or modelesque photos to be submitted. In fact, that may be contra-positive to your chances. It may give the impression that you are a model who can fit into a particular style of modeling or someone that expects too much from the agency.

Agencies prefer to work with a blank canvas and mold you into the model that they believe suits your style. This requires you to send photos that are simple in clothing, minimalistic in make-up, void of unnecessary accessories, and most importantly portraying your natural beauty. Give various expressions and style. When in doubt just be simple and make sure your photos are unedited and an accurate representation of your normal physical appearance.

Keep your figure and personality in check

Being a model is not simple about being a pretty face or having the perfect body. You have to know how to deal with your body. A confident personality is a must. During a photo shoot every single part of your body is working, like a dancer, you have to aware of the positioning of your body parts from your hair to your toe. Most importantly you have to be relaxed and confident with showing off your body. The energy that emanates from you in the photographs far outweighs your natural looks.

Also, despite the kind of model of you are, even if you are plus sized, there are certain specific requirements that you have to meet, thus exercise, eat healthily and keep yourself in shape. A healthy lifestyle also means your skin will show a naturally radiant glow, and make you a modeling asset.

Choosing the right Singapore model agency would mean half the war is won. The other half is about how far you willing to improve and develop yourself. Practice modeling poses by top models appearing on Vogue, Victoria’s secret or YouTube guide etcetera and do your research before getting involved in various projects. Best of luck to you to your aspirations!
